Guhagar literally meaning a house of caves in Marathi is a beach town located very close to the Sahyadri Mountains in the Konkan region.  Located in Ratnagiri district, it is at a distance of 276 kms away from Pune. The journey takes around five hours. Buses to Guhagar are available from Pune but their frequency is comparatively low. Guhagar does not have a railway station and those who wish to travel by train must get down at Chiplun , which at 44kms is the nearest railway station. Local transport like jeeps, buses etc are available from Chiplun to Guhagar.

The main attraction in Guhagar is that of the untouched, virgin beach. The beach in Guhagar stretches across 6 kms. It is lined with majestic coconut and betelnut trees. Guhagar is surrounded by unexploited forests and plenty of orchards of tropical fruits such as Alphonso Mango, Cashews and Jackfruits. The monsoons fill the surrounding mountains with pretty waterfalls.

All of Konkan is well known for a variety of temples spread across the beaches. Guhagar is probably a town that has one of the maximum number of temples located in a town. Hence it is famously known as the “Temple Town”. The temples here are mainly devoted to different avatars of Lord Shiva. The town sees throngs of Shiva devotees piling up to offer prayers to the deity especially during Mahashivratri. The Chandika Mandir, the Ufrata Ganpati on the beach, Shri Dashbhuja Lakshi Ganesh Devasthan and the Uma Maheshwari temple are also popular amongst tourists.

The best time to visit Guhagar is post monsoons, during the winters months, when the temperature is pleasant. The temperatures in Guhagar range from 39 degree Celsius in the summers to a minimum of 18 degrees Celsius in the winters.

Other than tropical fruits and their byproducts Guhagar is also known for coir items and you can buy plenty while on a trip here. Being a beach town Guhagar offers delicious and fresh seafood. There is also plenty to choose from for vegetarians as the pure veg Brahmani cuisine available here is also equally delectable.
