Ajanta caves are really a manmade wonder. Most of the caves house exquisite and detailed carvings on the walls, pillars and entrances. One can also see magnificent wall paintings. All these have been carved out of solid rock with little more than a hammer and chisel and to guide them all the way, the faith and inspiration of Buddhism.
It is amazing to what piece of art has been created from the tools that were available at that time. All the paintings show heavy religious influence and focus on Buddha, Bodhisattvas, incidents from the life of Buddha and the Jatakas. The paintings are executed on a ground of mud-plaster using the tempera technique. The experience is captivating!
