Known as the Cherapunji of Maharashtra, ‘Amboli’ is a small hill station located at a distance of 367 kms from Pune. At an altitude of 690 mts, in the Sahyadri mountains; it offers tourists beautiful views of the surrounding valley, gushing waterfalls and a wonderful weather. The best time to visit Amboli is from October to March as the weather is between 12 degrees Celsius to 33 degrees Celsius. In the monsoon Amboli witnesses incredibly high rainfall due to which a number of waterfalls form across the valley and are visible almost year round. An ecological hotspot, Amboli is home to a variety of flora and fauna.
 
The river Krishna has its origin in the mountains of Amboli. There is an ancient temple kown as Hiranyakashi temple around the source of the river. The river emerges through a cave and flows by the temple. There are seven ponds around this temple.
 
The main attraction for tourists in Amboli is the waterfalls. The Amboli falls and the Nangarta falls are amongst the most popular ones and a must visit. Kavlesad point is a spot from where you can enjoy a splendid view of the valley and the waterfalls. This place is also a popular echo point.
 
The sunset point offers tourists a beautiful view of the sunset. In the vicinity of Amboli is the Madhavgarh fort. This is one of the biggest forts in Maharashtra. The fort is in ruins today but a scenic view of the Arabian Sea can be seen from here.
 
The drive to Amboli takes about six hours. Buses to Amboli are available from Pune. Sawanvaadi which is the nearest railhead is at a distance of 30 kms. Goa is 90 kms away from Amboli. Buses and rikshaws are available for those who want to travel locally within Amboli.
 
Although a lesser known hillstation, there are a number of hotels in Amboli. The MTDC also owns a resort. When on a trip here, do not miss out on going to Sawantvadi. This quaint little village on the Maharashtra – Goa border is famous for one of kind wooden toys.
