The Karle caves are considered to be ultimate expression of Satwahan art of Hinayana sculpture. Karle-Bhaje is a duet. Karle is 5-7 k.m. from Malavali near Lonavala (same is the distance of Bhaje on the opposite side). The chaityagriha in Karle is probably the biggest of all in Maharashtra. The
goddess here is known by various names... viz: Yamai, Ambamata, Renuka, Parshuram Mata etc. The Ekvira trust is responsible for the management of the affairs here. A token amount is charged from the visitors to see the temple everyday except on friday.
Bhaje is a group of 18 caves. In the 12th cave is the Chaityagriha. People who come to visit Karle-Bhaje if don't have a binding on returning within a day only, should visit
Lohagad as well, which is nearer. The road to Lohagad is from Bhaje.
