Satara is one of the major district in Maharashtra. Satara district is famous for hill stations like Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani and various forts. Satara was the capital of Marathas after Sambhaji Maharaj's death for many years. Satara is located in the heart of West Maharashtra and thus a good connection with Pune , Sangli , Miraj and Kolhapur can be established. Satara is famous for 'Kandi Pedhas'. It is situated on the banks of river Krishna and a popular military school is pride of Satara. Ajinkyatara itself is sufficient to memories Satara's history. The fort is in the heart of the city and thus can be seen from every part of the city. It is 3300 feet high and one can have a wonderful view of the city from here. The beauty of Ajinkyatara can be observed from the hill of Yawateshwar. A good tar road is built from the city to main door of Ajinkyatara. The walls of the fort are 4 mtrs high.Many water tanks are there on the fort and there is no scarcity of water. One can visit the temples of Devi Mangalai , Lord Shanakar and Lord Hanuman on the north - east side of the fort. The amazing view of Satara city and Sajjangadh pleases the mind. The other hills that can be seen from the fort are Nandgiri and Chandan - Vandan forts on east , Jarandeshwar and Yawateshwar hills on the west. Ajinkyatara was won by Shahu Maharaj in 1708 and was with Marathas till 1818. Truly, Ajinkyatara is Major fort in Maharashtra and was historically very vital as one can keep watch on entire South Maharashtra. |
