Ajinkyatara Fort is a beautiful hill fort located on one of seven mountains surrounding Satara. It is one most popular tourist attractions in Satara.
Ajinkyatara is a name that best describes this magnificent fort in all its grandeur. Ajinkya – means impregnable. This fort structure designed in the times of the Maratha king Shivaji is truly so. At an elevation of 1356 metres, it is one of the seven mountains in the Sahyadris that surrounds Satara city.
It lies at a distance of 114 kms from Pune and may be reached within two and a half hours by road. Daily buses with excellent frequency are available from Swargate to Satara.
The climb to the top of the fort is relatively easy and takes about an hour and a half. There are no provisions for food or water on top or on the way up so be sure to carry both. Ajinkyatara is popular among trekkers for the beautiful temples on the fort. There are three temples on the fort devoted to Devi Manglai, Lord Shankar and Lord Hanuman respectively. They are located on the north east of the fort. There is a memorial of four walls on the fort mid way to the top of the fort. This is known as ‘Chaar Bhinti’. This memorial has inscriptions on the wall mentioning Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi and Lokmanya Tilak.
Once on top brace yourself for a spectacular treat to the eyes. The view of the surrounding landscape from top is indeed magnificent. The Nandagiri and Chandanvandan forts lie to the east of Ajinkyatara. Jarandeshwar and Yawateshwar hills are on the west and together they make for a breathtaking view from the top; especially in the monsoons wherein the natural beauty reaches its epitome. This fort is yet to fall prey to commercialization and still retains its natural beauty. It is during these monsoon months that Ajinkyatara is one of the most preferred destinations for trekking and hiking.

- While it is not possible to stay on the fort the closest accommodation is available in Satara city which is just three kms away from the fort.
